I get the opportunity to drop them off at the meeting spot tomorrow morning at 5:00 am. Woo Hoo. Tonight was the last regularly scheduled meeting and because the school where they normally meet is closed for break, I offered to have the meeting at my house as long as no one had to actually come into the house. It worked out very nicely. DaddyDoc was still packing his bags as the Scouts and their parents arrived. Everyone checked in their "check in" luggage and the parents packed the bags into the cars that will be driving the boys to the train station in the morning. The only thing we need to grab in the morning is Daddy Doc and Mr. Genius's carry-on bags.
But there are parts of this story that just amuse and amaze me. There are some things that are still "right" in this world...
This trip has been several years in the making. Two of the leaders found this camp near Eugene, Oregon and decided it would be a great adventure for our Scouts and Venturers to attend. Did you know that Venture scouts is a co-ed program? Our Troop has a Crew and we have three young ladies going to camp, too!
Tomorrow morning the group will board a train for an almost 24-hour trip to Eugene, Oregon. Because an Elks Lodge sponsors our Troop/Crew, our leaders contacted a Troop in Eugene that is also sponsored by an Elks Lodge. The original plan was that they would spend the night in their sleeping bags on the floor of the Elks Lodge there. One of the leaders travels quite a bit in his job and he and his co-workers all collect Holiday Inn points through these trips. He and his co-workers were able to donate enough Holiday Inn points to pay for enough rooms for the entire group to stay at a Holiday Inn on Saturday night. Isn't that nice?
Meanwhile, the Elks Lodge Troop is still going to help quite a bit. The Troop has assembled enough drivers and cars to transport our group of 24 plus all of their luggage while they are in the area. They not only transporting them from the train station to the hotel on Saturday, but they are taking them to camp on Sunday, sixty miles from Eugene. They will return the following week to take them back to the train station. Just because our leaders called and asked them to. Isn't that nice?
But wait, there's more...
Our scouts need to bring supplies with them. During the week they will need lanterns and they will even need cooking supplies one night. The leaders had planned to pack patrol boxes to check as luggage on the train with the necessary supplies. But just because they asked, the troop in Eugene will be loaning them patrol boxes for the week. Isn't that nice?
People are still kind. People are still willing to help out. I guess I should not be surprised because DaddyDoc and I have been blessed to have some very lovely friends in our lives. But it is so nice to see that there are other communities in the world that have good people in them, too.
I hope that we have an opportunity to do something as nice and lovely for someone.
I wish there were someone else nice enough to take DaddyDoc and Mr. Genius to the drop-off spot tomorrow at 5:00 am. I'm not that nice and lovely.

OK, how did you manage to let them meet at your place but not actually inside the house?
They came through the side gate into our backyard. We did luggage check in on our covered patio. The boys had their flag ceremony on my grass/yard. Parents sat on my retaining wall and/or my patio furniture or on the ground. No one needed to pee. Our backyard is decent sized so they all stayed out there.
